Vinyamar
the by-the-sea house of Turgon; the place of the waiting gear
Name and Position
Vinyamar — “the New-home” — was the seaside town built by King Turgon in Nevrast, the northern hollow land by the coast of Beleriand, in the years of his first lordship “at the meeting of the waters” — the Quenta: — it was his abode before the vision of Gondolin drew him inland to the hidden vale.
The Command of Ulmo and the Waiting Gear
- Ulmo’s command: When Ulmo (who had counselled the building) came to him in sleep and revealed the hidden valley, he commanded Turgon to build in Vinyamar the ‘house’ — and to leave there, in the treasury by the sea, a full set of war-gear — helm, mail, sword and shield — for a Messenger of the Deep whom he would send in the last days.
- The keeping: Turgon, going to Gondolin, closed the house and was gone; good.
- The finding: In the tale of Tuor, when the Vala’s messenger came at last (guided by the sea), he found the gauntlet and armor waiting — and (having) Tuor entered Gondolin arrayed in the ordained gear: the ratification of Ulmo’s covenant and the last preparation for the city’s fate.
Significance
Vinyamar is the “prophetic threshold” of the age’s greatest wooing-to-fate — the abandoned house by the sea where the Valar’s design lay veiled in armor for decades, the place whose gear proves Tuor’s mission, and the emblem (like the “guarded gift”) of Ulmo’s long patience in the counsels of the world.
