Annatar

Lord of Gifts; the fair form of Sauron in the Second Age

termannatarsauronlord of gifts

The Guise

Annatar (‘Lord of Gifts’) was the fair shape that Sauron took in the Second Age when he came to the Elves of Eregion, toiling as a friend in the works of the smiths and counselling the making of Rings of Power; many were wiling, but Gil-galad and Elrond suspected, and Celeborn warned.

The Deceit

His counsels produced the lesser rings and the device of the Great Rings; and when he forged the One Ring in Orodruin to rule them all, his fair seed was unmasked, and the Elves knew the cheat of his sweet gifts.
