the work of the Elven-smiths and of Annatar at Eregion
The Work
The Forging of the Rings was the great work of the Second Age at Ost-in-Edhil, when Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, counselled by Annatar, devised the Rings of Power: first the lesser rings, then the Great Rings — the Seven for the Dwarves and the Nine for Men — and the Three of the Elves, which alone were forged by the elven-craft unsullied.
The One
Secretly in the fires of Orodruin Sauron forged the One Ring to rule them all, and in the Ring-verse the hidden command was bound; when he set it upon his hand the Elves perceived him and took off their rings, and the ascending Shadow of Mordor rose to make war.
