The War

The War of the Elves and Sauron (S.A. 1693–1700) followed the discovery of Sauron’s Ring: when he seized the One and the Elves unmasked him, he made his great war upon them, towering over Eriador and sacking Ost-in-Edhil; Eregion was destroyed, Celebrimbor was slain, and Gil-galad was driven westward to the brink of the sea.

The Turning

For a while the Elves stood at the last mountains of the coast, until the great navy of Númenor under King Tar-Minastir came suddenly to their aid and threw Sauron back with a great slaughter; he escaped to Mordor, and the Elves thereafter trusted to the sea and built Rivendell for their refuge.
