Crebain
the crows of Fangorn and Isengard, the spies of the Dark Hand
Name and Kind
The Crebain were large, sinister crows of the mountains and the eaves of Fangorn that Saruman and his spies used as winged watchers — hence the sour word ‘crebain’ among the men of the Vale, and the fear the travellers had of the flying clouds of black birds.
In the Tale
When the Company crossed the edge of the river, they saw a storm of crebain wheel over the woods and the fells — a sign that the dark eyes were searching, and a token that the way was watched toward the passes.
