The Book

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume, opens in the Shire with Bilbo’s farewell party and the naming of Frodo as heir, and follows the Ring-bearing hobbit through the Old Forest, Bree, Weathertop and the Ford of Bruinen, to the great The Council of Elrond — where the Company of the Nine was chosen.

The Journey

The Fellowship passed the Gates of Moria (where Gandalf fell), and came to Lórien and the Mirror; the volume ends with the breaking of the Fellowship at the Falls of Rauros — Boromir slain, the hobbits parted, and the Ring-bearer gone alone across the Anduin.
