Frodo Baggins; the Ring-bearer of the Quest

Lineage

Frodo (Frodo Baggins) — a hobbit of the Shire, son of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck — was the nephew and heir of Bilbo Baggins, and through his parents’ kin belonged alike to the Baggins, Brandybuck and Took families of the four farthings.

The Quest

  • At the Council of Elrond in Rivendell, Frodo accepted the burden of the One Ring and went as the Ring-bearer in the Fellowship of the Ring — through Moria and the wilderness of the Emyn Muil, across the Dead Marshes, to the very fires of Mount Doom.
  • Never strong enough of his own will to destroy the Ring, he was mastered at the last upon Sammath Naur — yet the Quest was accomplished through the mercy he had shown to Gollum: the creature, following his master, fell with the Ring into the fire, and the Ring was unmade.
  • He had been wounded in spirit by the Morgul-knife and the sting of Shelob beyond all healing of the mortal world; and in the autumn of 3021 he sailed from the Grey Havens into the West with Gandalf and the last of the Elves.

Significance

Frodo is the “small and humble” through whom the whole salvation of Middle-earth was wrought — the worthy bearer whose pity (as Gandalf had counselled) proved wiser than any strength, and whose story closes the long age of the Ring that began with the forging of the One.
