The Shire

Name and Position

The Shire is the small fair land of the hobbits in Eriador, between the Brandywine river and the quiet downs: a green country of fields, lanes, mills and gardens, divided into four farthings and their vales, with its little towns (Hobbiton, Michel Delving) and its great families — Baggins, Took, Brandybuck and the rest. It was “a small land, but a good one”, far from the wars of the great.

The Land and the Tale

  • It is the home world of Frodo, Sam and their kin; at the War of the Ring it was raided and “scoured” by the ruffians of Saruman until the returned hobbits raised the ruffians’ works, and it was healed and put in order again in the years of Sam’s mayoralty.
  • Its peace and its smallness are the moral anchor of the later age: the Shire shows that the little folk, though spared the great deeds, carried the Ring and the fellowship of the tale.

Significance

The Shire is the “small green land” whose taming, in the coming of the Ring, frames the mythology’s lesson of the humble: the farthings that the great Dúnedain and Elves fought to protect — and that, at the end, the Ring-bearers left at the Grey Havens.
