The Woody End
the old silent woods of the eastern Shire
The Wood
The Woody End is the old, silent quarter of the eastern Shire where birch and oak and hazel closed over the lanes; there the traveller hears the whisper of the forest. It was by the Woody End that the hobbits, flying from the Shire, met the wandering company of the Elves under Gildor and slept in the ring of their watch-fire.
The Shadow
Not long after, the Black Riders crossed the bounds of the Shire and the peace of the Woody End was broken for ever — the first step of the long war.
