The Book

The Lord of the Rings is Tolkien’s great work, the successor-tale of The Hobbit: the story of the Ring-bearer Frodo and the last war of the Third Age against Sauron of Mordor, told in three volumes — the journey of the Fellowship, the perils of the Ring in Mordor, and the overthrow of the Dark Tower.

The Story

Across six books it carries the reader from the quiet Shire, by Rivendell and Moria, through Rohan and Gondor and the very land of Mordor; its great recount is: at the last the Ring is not taken but unmade, by pity and luck, in the fire of Orodruin.

Standing

Published 1954–55, it made the legendarium famous; its appendices kept the annals of the Valar and of the ages, and its maps and histories stand as the companion record of the world of the Ring.
