The Two Towers
the second volume of The Lord of the Rings (1954)
The Book
The Two Towers, the middle volume, follows the sundered Company: the Three Hunters pursuing the captive hobbits to Fangorn, the Ents’ march on Isengard, the great Battle of the Hornburg, and the councils of the White Rider — while the Ring-bearer and Samwise wade the Dead Marshes toward the Black Gate.
The Name
The two towers of the title are usually taken to be Orthanc of Isengard and the tower of Cirith Ungol (or Barad-dûr); the story moves from the wrack of Isengard to the edge of Mordor, ending with Frodo and Sam in the shadow of the Mountains of Shadow.
