The Stronghold

Helm’s Deep was a narrow, steep gorge in the valley of the Hornburg, so named for Helm Hammerhand, the old king who in the Long Winter defended the refuge against the Dunlendings; the tower of the Hornburg and the long Deeping Wall guarded the entrance at the mouth.

The Battle

In the War of the Ring the Westfold’s host was driven into the gorge and held through the night against the ten-thousand Uruk-hai and Wild Men of Saruman, until at daybreak the great horn was blown, and the coming of Gandalf with the riders of Erkenbrand — and behind them the Huorns of Fangorn — caught the besiegers in the valley and broke the power of the White Hand; the legend of the old horn’s return was renewed in that deed.
