The Land
The Westfold was the western part of Rohan, the long country under the feet of the mountains where the roads to Isengard and the passes of the north ran; its folk were close kind to the horses of the Mark, and its hills were the first to hear the horns of war.
In the War
When the hosts of Saruman crossed the Isen, the Westfold burned behind the riders, and its last refuge was the gorge of Helm’s Deep, where the fires of the war were held to the dawn.
