The royal house of the Mark descends from Eorl the Young, whose Oath bound his people to Gondor; through the ages it passed by the long kingship of the Eorlingas, the long winter of Helm Hammerhand, and the restored line of Fréaláf, to Théoden — and at the end to the new house of Éomer and Éowyn. Notes

  • Eorl came at the Field of Celebrant in T.A. 2510 and received the plains of the Mark; the line of fathers to sons ran nine kings before Helm.
  • Helm’s Deep keeps the name of Helm Hammerhand, who fell in the Long Winter in the refuge that bears it; his sister’s son Fréaláf slew Wulf the Dunlending and took back the throne.
  • Théoden fell at the Pelennor; his heir Théodred had fallen at the Fords of Isen, and so the crown passed to his sister-son Éomer Éadig, while Éowyn married Faramir of Gondor.
