Name and Deed

Eorl the Young was the bold young lord of the Éothéod who, called by Cirion the Steward to the aid of Gondor in its great peril, rode with his riders to the Field of Celebrant and broke the hosts of the Balchoth; in reward he received the open plains of Calenardhon and swore the Oath of friendship between his folk and the South-kingdom.

The Founding

Thus he became the first King of the Mark, and from the day of the Oath the riders of the plains were called the Rohirrim; he fell at last in the wars against the Easterlings, but his line and his people endured through all the ages of the Mark.
