The Oath of Eorl

the great oath sworn by Eorl the Young and Cirion

termoath of eorlcirionrohan

The Oath

The Oath of Eorl was sworn between Cirion, Steward of Gondor, and Eorl the Young, lord of the Éothéod, in the third age when the horsemen came to the aid of Gondor at the Field of Celebrant: friendship and alliance ‘in weal or woe’, and the gift of the open plains of Calenardhon as the land of the Riders.

Its Keep

The Oath bound the two peoples long: the Rohirrim rode to the aid of Gondor at the Pelennor after a thousand years, because ‘the Oath has been kept, the horn has been blown’, and the mark-men remembered the word of Eorl.
