The Appendices
The Appendices (A–F) at the end of The Lord of the Rings are the scholarly frame of the tale: Appendix A contains the Annals of the Kings and Rulers (Gondor, Rohan, Durin’s folk, and the tale of Aragorn and Arwen), Appendix B the Tale of Years, and C–F the family-trees, calendars, and notes of writing and spelling.
Their Use
For the first reader they are the lamp of the great ages — the bloodlines and the histories that turn the story into a world; for this compendium they are the source of the king-lists and the annals that fill the leaves of the vault.
