The Age of the Great Cities and the waning; the age of the Ring's unmaking
The Age
The Third Age began with the defeat of Sauron in the Last Alliance and the passing of the ring from Isildur’s hand. It was in that age that the Men of the West dwindled, the Elves faded, the Dwarves hid in their mountains, the great forests were consumed, and the Shire was founded — and in which, its long watch being ended, Sauron returned in secret to Mordor and made the Ring’s unmaking the sole road of its salvation.
The End
The Age ended in late 3021 with the sailing of the Ring-bearers from the Grey Havens and the dawn of the Dominion of Men, the Fourth Age.
