The Age

The Second Age began with the choosing of Elros as the first King of Númenor and the granting of the long life to the line of the mariners. It was the age of the growth and corruption of Númenor; of the forging of the Rings of Power and the One Ring; of the wars of Sauron against the Elves; and of the Downfall of the island-kingdom.

The End

It closed with the Last Alliance, the great war at the end of the age, the fall of Sauron, and the loss of the One Ring from the hand of Isildur — so that Elrond and the keepers of the Three carried their burden into the Third Age.
