The Office
The Stewards of Gondor were the lords who ruled the South-kingdom after the death of the last king — holding the rod of office, but ‘not a king, nor yet of the name that had failed’ (they sat in the house of the king upon his empty throne, in the name and for the memory of the king). The first was Mardil of the house of Húrin, and the line endured to Denethor II.
The Last
Under the Ruling Stewards the White Tree slept, the palantír-watches weakened and passed, and the great offices were carried through the wars; at the Return of the King the Stewardship was laid down at the feet of Aragorn, and Faramir was made the first of the new line, prince and steward of the Reunited Kingdom.
