Mardil

the first of the Ruling Stewards; the wise ward of the king's memory

personmanmardilstewardgondor

Name and Office

Mardil (surnamed Voronwë, ‘the Steadfast’) was the Steward of Gondor who, after the loss of King Eärnur, took up the rule of the realm in the king’s name — from him the line of the Ruling Stewards descends, and his prudent council began the long afternoons of Gondor.

His Wisdom

In his keeping the White Tree stood, the laws were kept, and the memory of the kingship was hallowed; the Stewards who followed all ‘sat in the seat of the king’ but never took the crown, as Mardil had ordained.
