Eärnur
the last King of Gondor; the victim of the Witch-king's challenge
Name and Reign
Eärnur was the last King of Gondor, the son of Eärnil; he was a valiant and war-hardened man, present at the downfall of Angmar when the Witch-king fled from the North, and joyful in battle beyond the custom of his house.
The Challenge
In his old age the Witch-king renewed the ancient taunt, and Eärnur, stung by the reproach of cowardice, rode with a few companions to the Gate of Minas Morgul — and was never seen again. With him ended the kingship of Gondor, and the Stewards took up the rule in the name of the king that never came.
