Name and Position

Minas Tirith — “the Tower of Guard” — is the great citadel of Gondor in the Third Age, built in seven circles on the Hill of Guard beneath Mindolluin at the eastern head of the Guarded Realm. Originally Minas Anor, the Tower of the (setting) Sun holding the palantír of the South, it took the name Minas Tirith when the shadow took Minas Ithil, the Tower of the Moon, to the east.

The City of the Kingship

  • In its high halls the Stewards of Gondor ruled long after the kingship slept; in the War of the Ring the city endured the great siege, and before its walls was fought the battle of the Pelennor Fields.
  • With the fall of Sauron, the heir Aragorn was crowned King upon its thrones; the White Tree was renewed in the court of the Fountain, and the broken sword Narsil was reforged as Andúril. Minas Tirith became the seat of the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor.

Significance

Minas Tirith is the last great city of Men in the later age — the “Tower of Guard” that held against the Shadow and was crowned anew at the return of the heir; its three towers (with the palantíri) keep the memory of the old towers of the Faithful.
