Names

The Ered Nimrais, the White Mountains, are the great southern range of the West-lands.

Geography

The range ran from the coasts of the western sea far eastward into the land, its dark mass crowning a long chain whose heads were ever white with snow; it was one of the chief walls of the South-kingdom. On its northern feet lay the borders of the northern realm and the land of the Sunlending, and upon its ridges stood the beacon-hills of the warning chain.

History

As the kingdom of Gondor grew, the passes and hidden valleys of the White Mountains were held by its men; and the beacons along their crest carried the alarm of war westward from Minas Tirith to the lands of the northern allies.
