The Stone of Erech

the black stone of the isle where the Dead were sworn

placestone of erechdeadisildur

The Stone

The Stone of Erech was a great round black stone standing alone upon the hill of Erech, set there by Isildur when he built his watchtower; about it the mountain-men swore the oath of allegiance, and died with the breaking of their word.

The Tryst

When Aragorn came at last to the hill with his Grey Company, the dead of the mountain were summoned by the oath that had been kept; the king’s shout broke the stone from its seat, yet the Dead rose and followed, and were set free after the ships of the Corsairs were taken.
