The Battle

The Battle of the Pelennor Fields was fought between the hosts of the Dark Lord and the free peoples of Gondor and Rohan in the great meadow before the wall of Minas Tirith. The army of Mordor — the Southrons, the Easterlings, the Haradrim and the Orcs — took the city; the Rohirrim under Théoden came down from the north at last and broke the siege.

The Deed of the Field

Théoden fell in the hour of victory; the Witch-king of Angmar, struck by the blade of Merry and pierced by Éowyn, fell by the sword of Éowyn — “I am no living man” — even as the black ships of the Corsairs, taken and manned by Aragorn, came up the Anduin to turn the field; the day was won, and only the final sortie to the Black Gate remained.
