Uruk-hai

the great soldier-orcs bred in Isengard and Mordor

Name and Nature

Uruk-hai were the great orcs of the later age — tall, straight-limbed, and terrible, of the soldier-folk bred by Saruman in the pits of Isengard (with the mark of the White Hand) and by Sauron in Mordor, who feared nothing of the daylight and fought in ordered bands.

Deeds

From Isengard the great soldier-orcs of the White Hand hunted the Ring-bearers — it was the Uruk-hai who captured Merry and Pippin by the river — and at Helm’s Deep and the Pelennor they were the hammer of the Dark Hand against the West.
