Orcs

Goblins; the foul and corrupted folk bred by the Enemy

Name and Kind

Orcs (Goblins to the folk of the North) are the foulest of Melkor’s creatures — squat, cruel, and numerous, bred in the Elder Days to be the foot-soldiers of the Shadow and to hurt and defile the good works of the free peoples. They fear the light, and the Elves and the greater beasts of the light dread them not so much as they reek of malice.

In the Histories

From the mines of the Misty Mountains and the pits of Angband they spread through the ages; they served Sauron in the wars of the Ring, and their kindreds — the goblins of the mountains, the Uruk-hai of Saruman, the black orcs of Mordor — darkened every age of Middle-earth until the end of the Third Age.
