Barrow-wights
the cold wraiths of the old barrows
Name and Nature
Barrow-wights are the cold and fiendish wraiths that crept into the ancient tombs of the Barrow-downs when the evil reached from Angmar in the North-kingdoms’ dying years; they are spirits of fear that seize the living and lay them in the cold earth among the old gold.
The Encounter
In the night Frodo and his companions were taken by a barrow-wight and offered with the treasure of the mound, until the voice of Tom Bombadil scattered the shadow and the hobbits were armed with the swords of the West that the Wight had hoarded for the hurting of the Witch-king.
