Name and Mastery

Tom Bombadil was the Master of the Old Forest, a short, stout, blue-eyed fellow in a great yellow boots and a battered hat, whose blue coat and red feather were known throughout the wood. He was “the oldest” — fatherless and without beginning, he said; he was here before the river and the tree, and the Ring had no power over him; he could see the Rider when invisible, and would not have kept the Ring.

Deeds

He rescued the hobbits from the Old Forest and from the Willow-man, and again from the Barrow-wight whose mound he broke; to him they gave their knives of the Westernesse, and his counsel — the secret of the name of things — was spoken at the last tree of the world.

The Question of his Being

The Wise do not know his nature: Gandalf guessed he is as old and strange as the wood itself — not of the order of the Ainur, but one of the first, “the spirit of the (vanishing) countryside of his own land” said Tolkien, and around him the Ring is but a trinket.
