The Forest

The Old Forest lay beyond the eastern Hedge of Buckland — a wood, it was said, that was the last remnant of the great primeval forest of the elder days; it was old and resentful of the axes of Shire-folk, its trees moved in the dark, and its paths turned and led the unwary astray toward the Withywindle.

Passage

Frodo and his friends entered it out of Buckland, were led astray to the Withywindle, and reached the house of Tom Bombadil, who freed them and set their feet on the road toward the Downs.
