The River

The Brandywine (Baranduin, or ‘brown river’) was the great west-flowing river of the Shire, rising in the hills and reaching the sea far south-east; it bounded the eastern edge of the Shire, and at its great bridge the East Road crossed into Buckland.

In the Story

Its ferry at Buckland was the gate of the old country, and many of the old tales of the hobbits ran by the Brandywine to the sea.
