Name and Story
Farmer Maggot was a sturdy, fenced yard-farmer of the Marish who grew the famous mushrooms of his land and would not have his turnips and his bacon disturbed; his fierce hounds once drove the young Samwise across the River and into the band.
Good Turn
When Frodo fled the Shire, Maggot took him in, gave him a ride and a bed, and warned the party in the best of his gruff kindness of the Riders that were abroad; though he was firm about the mushrooms, he was a good neighbor of the fleeing hobbits.
