The Divisions

The Four Farthings were the four quarters into which the Shire was divided - the Northfarthing, the Southfarthing, the Eastfarthing and the Westfarthing - each with its own folk and its own character, and none ruling over the others.

In the Tale

The farthings were the map of the little kingdom: Hobbiton stood in the Westfarthing, the Marish and Buckland nigh the East, the Tooks in Tuckborough of the Westfarthing; and the riding of the farthings by the Ruffians was the grief of the Scouring.
