Gerontius Took; the long-lived chief of the Tooks

Name and Repute

The Old Took (Gerontius) was the chief of the Tooks and Thain of the Shire, the long-lived founder of the family’s renown: he was said to have gone off with a fairy lady in his youth (as the tale has it), would frisk with the Elves, and lived a hundred and thirty years - a wonder to all the Shire.

In the Tale

Bilbo Baggins was a kinsman of the Old Took through his mother Belladonna; the memory of the Old Took’s riotous age, and the tales of his acquaintance with the elves, were part of the unexpectedness of the Baggins blood.
