Bilbo
Bilbo Baggins; the burglar of Erebor; the discoverer of the Ring
Lineage
Bilbo (Bilbo Baggins) was a hobbit of the Shire, of a comfortable Baggins family; through his mother Belladonna Took he had the adventurous Took streak. He is the uncle and one-time guardian of Frodo.
The Quest of Erebor
- In the great adventure of the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain he went as the accidental “burglar” with Thorin and his company, guided by Gandalf, and in the tunnels beneath the Mountain found the One Ring — “lucky number” by chance and mercy.
- He won the riddling game with Gollum, found the Arkenstone in the Mountain (the jewel about which the later quarrels and the war turned), and returned to the Shire a wiser hobbit.
The Ring and the West
Keeping the Ring (which stretched his days and darkened his heart), he gave it at last to Frodo at the Council of Elrond, and in his great age sailed with the Ring-bearer from the Grey Havens into the West — the author of the tales of the Red Book that begin the Shire’s great history.
Significance
Bilbo is the exemplar of the sudden hobbit: the comfort-loving little soul in whom the great story turned, by whom the Ring (and so the history) began its passage out of the dark.
