Name and Lineage

Thorin (Thorin Oakenshield) was the heir of the kingship of Erebor — of Durin’s Folk — driven from the Mountain when the dragon Smaug took its hoard; he dwelt long in exile in the Blue Mountains, “Oakenshield” from the branch he bore at the battle of Azanulbizar.

The Quest of Erebor

  • At the counsel of Gandalf, Thorin led his twelve companions and the hobbit Bilbo on the Quest of Erebor, reclaiming the Lonely Mountain from the worm.
  • In the victory he was crowned King under the Mountain; but the prize of the Arkenstone turned his heart greedy, and in the Battle of Five Armies he fell — mortally wounded in the fight against the Orcs — reconciled before his death; he was buried beneath the Mountain, the Arkenstone laid upon his breast.

Significance

Thorin is the Dwarf-king of the great renown of the Third Age — the prideful, doomed restorer of the Mountain whose fall in the Five Armies is among the closing deeds of the old era of the Dwarves’ halls.
