The Stream

The Enchanted River was the dark and sluggish stream that crossed the paths of Mirkwood, its water black and all but still, carrying the enchantment of the wood; the Elves said that those who bathed in it would fall into a slumber deep and long.

The Misadventure

In the quest of the dwarves it worked their sorrow: Bombur, burdened, stumbled and fell into the stream, and the company slept beside him for the night and the following days, until hunger drove them onward and the dwarves’ courage waned in the dark heart of the forest.
