Name and Position

Erebor — “the Lonely Mountain” — is the great solitary mountain to the east of the Running river, and the site of the Dwarven kingdom of the King under the Mountain. In its deep halls the Longbeards (Durin’s Folk) dwelt in wealth until the dragon Smaug drove them out and lay upon their hoard.

The Quest and the Years

  • The return: in the Quest of Erebor, Thorin Oakenshield’s company (with Bilbo and the wizard) entered the Mountain, retook the King’s long caverns, and in the Battle of Five Armies defeated the Orcs — the kingdom was restored, and the Mountain was filled with light again for the years of the later age.
  • Within its hoard lay the great jewel The Arkenstone, “the Heart of the Mountain”, about which the quarrels and the war turned.

Significance

Erebor is the archetypal “dragon-hoard mountain” of the later legend — the Dwarves’ lost throne under the Mountain, the type-setting of the treasure and the worm, and the door through which the Ring returned into the story.
