The Line
The Kings of Durin’s Line were the hereditary lords of the Longbeards — the Dwarves of Durin’s folk — from Durin the Deathless, who awoke at the elder dawn, through the mighty kings of Khazad-dûm and the exiles, to those who returned after the dragon’s end (Thráin, Thorin, Dáin) and the chosen kingship of the Fourth Age.
The Name
The line was named for Durin, who was held to return (‘the rebirth of Durin’) to the Dwarves in their need; its last great lords in the tales — Thorin Oakenshield, Dáin Ironfoot, and Gimli the Elf-friend — passed the annals of the Longbeards into the days of the Fourth Age.
