The Realm

Khazad-dûm was the great realm of the Dwarves of the line of Durin under the Misty Mountains — in the Dwarvish tongue ‘the Dwarf-mansion’, the vastest of their halls, famous for its value and its mithril; in the Second Age it throve in trade and friendship with the Elves of Eregion.

Friendship and Fall

Its long friendship with the Gwaith-i-Mírdain opened the road to Eregion and set the Doors of Durin as a gate of fellowship; but in the Third Age greed and the delving for mithril woke the Balrog’s doom, and the city became the dark Moria, the Black Chasm, whose name still haunts the annals.
