Moria
Khazad-dûm; the Dwarf-mansion beneath the mountains
Name and Story
Moria — in the Dwarves’ own speech Khazad-dûm — is the vast Dwarf-mansion delved by Durin’s folk beneath the Misty Mountains: the prime delving of the Longbeards, in whose halls the friendship with Eregion’s smiths once flourished (“the Doors of Durin” opened toward the Elves’ realm). In the later ages it was lost to the Durin’s Bane (the Balrog) and the Orcs — its “Black Pit” history belonging. > (The Silmarillion proper mentions the delving only in passing; the fuller history lies with the later texts.)
