The Pass

The Redhorn Gate was the pass offered by the high road over the Misty Mountains, beneath the cruel peak of Caradhras (the Redhorn); it was the way that led east into the upper vales toward the Anduin, but the mountain was ever hostile to the stranger.

The Attempt

The Company attempted the crossing in the gloom of the winter snows; Caradhras hurled snow and stones upon them, and Gandalf’s fire was quenched, and they were driven back at last to the West-gate of Moria — the door of the deep, which they entered in its stead.
