the true-silver of Khazad-dûm, light and harder than steel
The Metal
Mithril (“true-silver”) is the rare and precious metal of Khazad-dûm, light as silk and harder than steel, which the Elves loved and the Dwarves delved with toil and greed; it was worth ten times its weight in gold, and the hoarding of it passed into legend.
Its Coins and Fall
Of mithril were wrought the Doors of the gates and the coat of the Ring-bearer; its mining wakened the Balrog, and with the ruin of Moria the well of true-silver was sunk, and the metal became the marvel of the later ages.
