the blind beast in the lake before the Doors of Durin

Name and Deed

The Watcher in the Water is the blind, eyeless beast that dwells in the dark pool at the foot of the Cliff of the Doors of Durin; it thrust its long, many-fingered tentacles up to catch the companions when they approached the gate, and seized with its hunger the pony of the traveller before the door was forced.

Its End

Dragging back into the water, it carried the leading pony with it, and its death under the scattered rubble of the door-passage followed the Company’s flight; the watchers of Moria did not again trouble the living road.
