The Gate
The Doors of Durin were the great western gate of the Dwarf-realm of Khazad-dûm, wrought by the Elven-smiths of Eregion in friendship — dark as shadow and as vast as a great hall, inscribed with the name of Durin and the mariners’ moon-letters; they said in runes: ‘Speak, friend, and enter’ — and the word of entrance was the Elvish word for friend: Mellon.
The Company
Through that gate the Company of the Ring entered Moria from the West; the Balrog and the watch destroyed the doors behind them, as the writing of the tale records the last passage of the guarded threshold.
