Durin
the Deathless; the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves
Name and Story
Durin — “the Deathless” — is, in the Dwarves’ own tradition, the eldest and greatest of the Seven Fathers, the eldest who woke alone, without other Dwarves at his side, and who is “deathless” in the legend (reborn — the Longbeards counted him as having returned when a rightful heir “Durin” appeared). He walked from his awakening to the great delve of Khazad-dûm beneath Caradhras (the later Moria), whose Dimrill Dale he took for his kingdom; the Longbeards (Durin’s Folk) descend from him and held his dwelling for ages. > (His name’s later reappearances — Durin II–VII, and “Durin’s Bane” — are of the later ages.)
