Thráin II; the father of Thorin; the last messenger of the Mountain

Name and Story

Thráin (Thráin II) was the son of the murdered King Thrór and the father of Thorin. When Smaug destroyed Erebor the treasure of the Mountain passed to the dragon, and Thráin went with his small son and his people into exile, nursing vain hope of the Arkenstone and of the return.

The Wanderer

Bearing the last of the Seven Rings, he wandered the lands of the North and at last was taken into the pits of Dol Guldur, where Sauron broke his will and his ring. When Gandalf entered the place in his search for Thrór’s ring, he found an old and wandering madman — the tormented Thráin — who gave him the key and map of Erebor and the word “for Thorin”, and died that night.

The Legacy

The map and key were the very instruments of the Quest of Erebor, and so through his death Thráin set his son’s foot upon the road that reclaimed the Mountain.
