The Fall

The Sack of Erebor was the ruin of the great dwarf-kingdom and of the town of Dale in the winter of T.A. 2770, when Smaug the Golden, raking the North as a storm, broke into the Mountain and slew the people of the valley; the King under the Mountain, Thráin, and the survivors fled as exiles, and the dragon lay long upon the hoard.

Recovery

The Quest of Erebor was set in motion against that loss; and the hoard was not recovered until the dragon’s death at the hand of the Bowman Bard in T.A. 2941, a year after the Council’s drive of the Shadow from Dol Guldur.
