Dale
the North-town of the vale of the Running River; the kingdom of Bard
The Realm
Dale lay in the valley under the east slope of the Lonely Mountain, a busy town of Men who traded the gold and craft of the dwarves with the south. Its bell swung in the days of the Master of Lake-town, and its men bowed to the lords of the line of Girion.
Fall and Return
Smaug destroyed the town of Dale with fire before he took the Mountain; after the dragon’s fall and the Battle of Five Armies the city was rebuilt by the people of the town and of Lake-town under King Bard, and long prospered in friendship with the dwarves, until the armies of the East in the War of the Ring overran it — and after Sauron’s fall it rose again.
